Blacksmithing classes
     
Learn the art of blacksmithing from professionals who have created many outstanding works in the Northwest and the nation.  Many hand forged items are on display in the studio for sale to the public.  Talk with the blacksmiths about any custom architectural features or items you may need. Class is two hours. $60 per class.  Limited to 4 students per day.  Must be 12 years or older to register.  Classes can be scheduled for 10AM or 1PM.  Please pay the blacksmith on arrival, no credit cards. However, you must register to hold a place by calling 503-272-3301. 10AM till 4PM, or leave a message.  You may also register or get further information by e-mail by clicking on this button. REGISTER You are welcome to observe the blacksmiths as they work.  Students must wear 100% cotton clothing, and closed toed boots or shoes w/ socks.

Darryl Nelson. Owner of the Meridian Forge in Eatonville, Washington, Darryl has over 30 years of blacksmithing experience.  Artist Blacksmith Association of North America (ABANA) demonstrator for over 20 years. Founding member and former president of NWBA, Northwest Blacksmiths Association.
Darryl can also be commissioned for architectural or art pieces.  The blacksmith shop usually has many hand forged pieces for sale.  Darryl's work may also be seen at the Mountain Gallery located in The Mount Hood Cultural Center & Museum, 10AM till 5PM daily.

Beautiful hand forged unique gifts and items for your home or cabin.  Fireplace sets, coat hooks, candle holders, wreath hangers and many more one of a kind pieces.  Talk to the blacksmith and order a custom piece?  Ajacent to the Blacksmith Shop, the Warm Glass Studio will be open with glass ornaments and gift items of glass.  Upstairs the jewelry, fiber arts, painting, and paper artists will display and sell wonderful items for your holiday gift giving, or for yourself?  10AM till 6PM Friday & Saturday, 10AM till 4PM Sunday.
Hot cider and treats for all our guests.  Come join the fun...kick off the holidays with the artists and instructors at The Arts Cabin.

Watercolor On The Mountain
    Class is FULL

July 21, 22, 23.  1PM to 4PM, Cost: $125 for three days.
12 student maximum class.  This class will take you from the initial sketch, design, color choices through the final washes and drybrushing.  I will be giving demonstrations, personal asisstance, guidance and of course we will have a critique so that we can share what every student has learned.  Some of the sessions will be out of doors, on-location, weather permitting.  Clothing should be comfortable, materials light and basic to carry.  Our subjects will range from trees, water, clouds, lighting to the feeling of beauty surrounding the Mount Hood area and all that involves.  Be prepared for some experimental as well as traditional approaches to the challenge of recording your day on Mount Hood in watercolor.

Painting the Landscape in Watercolor & Acrylic

October    22,23,24       10AM till 3:30PM  $145 for all three days.
This workshop will cover the basic elements to achieve a landscape that has aerial perspective, good color & convincing brushwork.
Emphasis will be on the forming of nature's shapes.  Mountains, trees, flowing and still water will all be explored.  Time permitted, we will also do a bit of out-of-doors sketching, photo taking & observing. Jude will supply many pieces of reference material, but it will be suggested that beginning painters follow her simple step-by-step methods in order to finish work each day.
 
Jude will demo in watercolor, followed by the same subject in acrylics.  You are welcome to do both, or simply choose which medium you are most comfortable with.  Critique will wrap up each day. 
 
Jude Welter has been teaching painting through Clackamas Community Education since 1985.  During the summer months, she held paint-outs in Montana, Sisters, Oregon & Prineville, Oregon.  Her paintings have been featured in several magazines, and in 2007 she was choosen as the artist to produce paintings that featured Mount Hood and were used as awards for 8 outstanding businesses in Clackamas County.  She was the judge for the art entries in the 2008 Clackamas County Fair.  Jude was on the founding  board fo the 'First City Arts Faire' and the 'Three Rivers Art Guild' as well as the 'Open Studios of Beavercreek.'  Her work is featured at Art Heads in Happy Valley, Wallflowers Gallery in Canby, Framed by Design in Lake Oswego and at her studio, Crabapple Creek near Beavercreek, Oregon.

JEWELRY MAKING.

Jan received her training in metal jewelry at William Holland School of Lapidary Arts in Young Harris, Georgia.   This winter Jan studied under Maggie Roschyk in Mesa, Arizona. 
 
Bangle Bracelet

Class Fee: $150, 2 week advanced registration.
Create a one of a kind bracelet using a variety of semi-precious stones and glass beads.
Learn to make Sterling Silver 'eye pins', spiral bangles and 'caged' beads.
All equipment and materials are provided, including Sterling Silver toggle clasp and jump rings.
 
Classes may be scheduled with a 2 person minimum.

All tools and materials will be provided.
Learn to wire wrap a cabochon into an elegant, one of a kind pendant.  Some experience in wire wrap will make for a more enjoyable class experience.  We will work with copper wire to learn sculpture techniques and then work with Sterling Silver wire.
*Private classes may be scheduled on your date of choice, with 2 person minimum.  2 week advance paid registration required. Perfect "friends get away" on Mount Hood.
Beginners wire wrapping classes available on request.  2 student minimum.  We will start from scratch to learn the begining techniques for wire wrap.  Inquire as to available dates and costs.
 
GLASS CLASSES & WORKSHOPS 
 
Beginning Fused Glass.  Thursday, May 21st.  One day class.  10AM till 3/4 PM.
$150, includes all materials and instruction.  Pick up projects at Mt. Hood Museum after Monday, May 25th.

Explanation of different kinds of glass, firing, kilns, fusing & slumping. Complete 2 small projects.  Some of the options are: bowl, small sconce lens, wind chimes or plate for stand. (stand extra).  Bring your lunch or 2 minute drive to Govt. Camp restaurants.  We will break at noon for one hour and complete the projects by 4PM or sooner.   Kiln work will be done by the Arts Cabin staff...need only be present for the lay up of the glass.  Projects will be delivered to the Mt. Hood Cultural Center & Museum for pick up starting Monday, May 25th,10AM till 5PM, open daily, or for an additional fee the projects can be mailed to you when finished.  This is a class for the absolute beginner, to get you started in fused glass at a great price.
 
 
2 day, Beginning Glass Bead Making & Wire Jewelry Class!
Arts Cabin exclusive class.  Available starting April.  Mid week dates only till June.
Requires 1 week advance registration.  Minimum 2 students. 
10AM till 5PM daily w/ 1 hour lunch
$100 per student.  Includes all materials, tools, and supplies.
This is a unique opportunity to learn the art of making glass beads at the torch using Bullseye Glass, and finishing them as a piece of wearable art for all to see! 
 
Day One: Learn to create beautiful glass beads using a surface mix, Minor Burner torch and Bullsyeye glass. Included in class is safety, studio set up, and glass properties.
 
Day Two: Take your new beads out of the annealing kiln and remove from mandrels, learn to clean and prep.  Then upstairs to the Jewelry Table!  Don't just hide your first beads away in a drawer...wear them!  Create a unique piece of jewelry to wear proudly.  Findings and additional jewelry components supplied.  This class is an Arts Cabins exclusive.  No refunds after one week before schduled class date.  Excellant value for your arts / jewelry making dollar.  Usually only found as individual classes.

Begining Glass Bead making at the torch:
2 day advance registration required.  2 student minimum. Available July & August classes, your date of choice w/ 2 day advance registration.
10Am till 4PM.  One day 'getting started' class! $150 per student.  Must pay full amount at registration. 
Learn to make glass beads using the Minor Burner, surface mix torch, and Bullseye Glass (soft glass COE 90).
Also included in your instruction: Safety, studio set up, types of glass.  In this one day class you will not get too far into decoration, although beginning techniques will be taught.  Beads will be sent to students as one day class does not allow students to leave w/ beads and allow annealing time in kiln. 2 day class recommended for aspiring bead makers.

2 day Beginning Glass Bead Making:
